Loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity are not distant ideals; they all refer to states of mind. The mind is where suffering, happiness, love, and tolerance arise. When the mind has enough tolerance and love then we can let go easily. That is also the meaning of spiritual practice.
