The world always operates through duality. We cannot truly experience happiness without having experienced suffering. Or can we really recognize the positive without seeing the negative side of an issue? What meaning would the Sun have if we had never experienced darkness? Opposites help us appreciate and feel grateful for difficulties and suffering. They also help us recognize the value of the present sooner. We understand that suffering always exists within happiness. At the end of degeneration lies evolution.
Duality also teaches us that experiences are simply to be known, without attachment or rejection.
